Mathaino is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young students in underserved communities in the US and abroad to achieve their full academic potential. The name "Mathaino" is derived from the Greek word Μαθαίνω, which means “I learn.”
Founded in 2010, Mathaino became an early advocate for Khan Academy, using its innovative platform in after-school programs for underserved communities in New Jersey. In 2011, we joined Khan Academy's international effort to localize the platform for Greek learners. By 2021, we launched the Khan Academy Greek website, offering complete math courses for elementary and middle school (Δημοτικό και Γυμνάσιο) with videos, articles, exercises, and progress-tracking tools, and our development work continues as we strive to complete all math and science classes for all grades, including Lykeio. Today, over 50,000 Greek-speaking learners benefit annually from this resource. Similarly, in the U.S., we serve hundreds of students from low-income families in New York and New Jersey through our college prep programs, which use Khan Academy’s platform to build math and English skills, prepare for standardized tests, and achieve academic success. These efforts not only refine our platform and content but also drive the development of personalized teaching models—empowering every student to learn effectively by embracing their unique ways of thinking—while ensuring quality education is accessible to all.
Living in an increasingly interdependent world offers both opportunities and challenges. Addressing those challenges requires teaching our young generation new approaches to learning and collaboration, so they can effectively lead and make the world a better place for all. Learning and education have to evolve too because they need to reflect the challenges of the global society into which young people are entering.
In an era of big data and rapidly evolving new technologies, cognitive skills will continue to be important, but so will social skills for collaboration and leadership. Social and work equality will also be essential to ensure that people from all cultures and races contribute effectively to progress.
As advances in online learning evolve, students will enjoy continuous access to knowledge anytime, anywhere. However, hands-on, immersive learning will remain a vital advantage of in-person education. Mathaino is committed to opening new pathways to learning, whether by expanding teaching talent, leveraging technology, or improving tools to measure student and teacher performance.
We believe we have an opportunity to shape the future of learning for generations to come. How we revolutionize education will benefit our students first, but the impact of these efforts should resonate across communities and the world they will serve.
