ABOUT US

Our Story

Mathaino is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization dedicated to empowering K–12 students and teachers to achieve their full academic potential. The name Mathaino comes from the Greek word Μαθαίνω, meaning “I learn.”

Founded in 2010, Mathaino became an early advocate of Khan Academy, introducing its innovative learning platform to after-school programs serving underserved communities in New Jersey. In 2011, we joined Khan Academy’s international initiative to localize content for Greek learners, and in 2013 we launched our Learning Efficacy Program, a small U.S.-based initiative that helps us test and refine the methods, tools, and learning practices used in our global Khan Academy Greek project. The program engages middle and high school students from low-income families in New York and New Jersey, focusing on math, English, and science enrichment. By studying how students respond to different instructional techniques, pacing models, and feedback tools, we gain valuable insights that help improve learning outcomes at scale.

By 2021, we launched our official Khan Academy Greek website, offering complete math courses for elementary and middle school students (Δημοτικό και Γυμνάσιο) that include videos, articles, exercises, and progress-tracking tools for teachers and parents. Our development continues as we work toward completing all math and science courses across grades, including Λύκειο (Lykeio). On average, more than 50,000 Greek-speaking learners benefit from this free educational resource each year.

Together, our work in Greece and the United States advances a shared mission to refine learning tools, develop personalized teaching models, and ensure that every student can learn effectively in their own way, regardless of background or circumstance.

Our Vision

Living in an increasingly interdependent world offers both opportunities and challenges. Addressing those challenges requires teaching our young generation new approaches to learning and collaboration so they can effectively lead and make the world a better place for all. Learning and education must evolve as well, reflecting the realities and needs of the global society into which young people are entering.

In an era of big data, artificial intelligence, and rapidly advancing technologies, cognitive skills will continue to be essential, but so will social skills for collaboration and leadership. Ensuring social and educational equality will be critical so that people from all cultures and backgrounds can contribute meaningfully to progress.

As technology reshapes the landscape of education, artificial intelligence can become a powerful force for good, personalizing learning, supporting teachers, and helping every student learn at their own pace. Mathaino is committed to ensuring that these innovations serve humanity, enhancing rather than replacing the human connection that lies at the heart of effective teaching and learning.

As advances in online learning expand, students will enjoy continuous access to knowledge anytime and anywhere. Yet hands-on, immersive learning will remain a vital advantage of in-person education. Mathaino is dedicated to opening new pathways to learning, whether by expanding teaching talent, leveraging technology, or improving tools to measure student and teacher performance.

We believe we have an opportunity to shape the future of learning for generations to come. How we revolutionize education will benefit our students first, but the impact of these efforts will resonate across communities and the world they will one day lead.
